One Sky Project

07 November, 2015 Africa, Adventure Tourism, Community

A group of pilots travel to Africa to partner with local NGOs, share the sky, and foster sustainable adventure tourism economies.

One Sky Project is a collaboration between five paragliding and hang gliding pilots with the following goals:

  • Increase public knowledge of local nonprofit organizations by increasing their public exposure through high-quality media.
  • Expose and engage communities in new physical activities by taking locals on free paragliding flights and teaching them how to slackline.
  • Increase adventure tourism throughout Southern and Eastern African by highlighting and developing under-utilized flying sites.

The local non-profits selected as partners in this project are:

Mufindi Orphans: an organization which works “to provide shelter, sustenance, education, and medical care for vulnerable children and families in the Mufindi District of Tanzania; to curtail the spread of HIV/AIDS, to teach life skills (language, fiscal, vocation and self-sufficiency) and to create supportive networks and opportunities for future generations.” (mufindiorphans.org)

Amani ya Juu: Which translates to, “peace from above” in Swahili. Amani is a sewing and reconciliation program for marginalized women in Africa. Women from many African nations and cultures are learning to work together through faith in God who provides a higher peace that transcends cultural and ethnic differences. Amani is a proud member of the Fair Trade Federation and committed to holistic development. Our wide selection of high-quality handbags, home & kitchen décor, jewelry, clothing and children’s items are made out of local African materials. (amaniafrica.org)

The group of five will spend four months traversing Southern Africa attempting to capture the stories, culture, beauty, and sometimes sorrow of local communities. Although their gear will be minimal, they will utilize their collective skills and top of the line camera equipment to highlight the collective work of communities and organizations through media. Ultimately, they aim to live, capture, and share our experiences with the world.
