The Cloudbase Foundation works to support the Sakala community center in Cité Soleil, Port Au Prince, Haiti.  Cité Soleil is reputed to be among the poorest and most dangerous slums in the Western Hemisphere.  Nestled within is Sakala, a community center run by Haitians for Haitians.  The focus of the The Cloudbase Foundation’s fundraising efforts was to develop an urban gardening education and tool lending center for Cité Soleil, based out of Sakala.

This densely populated neighborhood suffers from decades of exploitation, government neglect, and social stigmatisation, and Cité Soleil’s youth bear the brunt of this marginalization.  The founders of the staff of Sakala have counciously placed themselves there, working to transform children’s lives.

Sakala is a community center and organization that fosters and provides sports, education, urban gardening, community service, and peace building workshops for youth.  Some 250 young people from all four blocks of Cité Soleil are enrolled in Sakala’s programs, and the community center’s playground, sports facilities, classrooms, library, computer lab, and urban garden also serve the community at large.

On a recent trip to Haiti by CBF Pilot Nick Greece, KEEN sent 35 pairs of shoes for the afterschool soccer program based in Sakala.  The video shot features Daniel Tillias, the director of Sakala, and the kids from Sakala who can now play with a lot more ease on the hot, paved, soccer pitch.

Also present at the center is the Haitian Education and Leadership Program (HELP).  HELP’s mission is create, through scholarships, a community of young professionals and leaders who will promote a more just society in Haiti.  This education program is attempting to grow the middle class in Haiti through higher education, helping helping young people graduate from collect and enter the work force, bringing themselves and their entire families into the middle class.
